In Part 1 of How to Attract and Retain the Best Talent in Healthcare, we focused on some essential steps to get started. In part 2 we will cover the interview and onboarding processes.
The Interview
The interview process is an opportunity to create an impression on the candidate of what it would be like to be a part of your community. Be prepared; they assume that how they’re treated in the interview process is how they would be treated as an employee. Also giving timely feedback is critical. Trust that they are also interviewing elsewhere and communicate accordingly – A slow response time could cost you the best candidate!
The Agenda
Consider the details of the process leading up to the interview, as well as the time afterwards. Establish when and where someone will meet and welcome them. Be open and transparent about potential travel reimbursements and how long they take or if you schedule it all for them up front.
- Will they have adequate time for lunch and someone to eat with?
- Do they have a welcome gift/basket/message waiting for them at the hotel?
- Has a community tour been arranged?
- Do they have a driver or need access to a car?
Making candidates feel valued throughout the interview process goes a long way!
Culture and Opportunity
Find ways to express your unique culture and what it’s like to work for your organization during the interview. What are some of the other benefits you offer?
- Mission projects abroad?
- A four-day workweek with the fifth at home doing necessary paperwork?
- Company or team events?
Any of the special benefits or unique opportunities you offer will help set you apart.
The Onboarding Process
A smooth onboarding process is an essential key to good retention. Have a streamlined process to ensure engagement with peers, physicians, and staff starting on day one. Introduce them in meetings and take them to lunch. Involve the recruiter who brought the candidate as well; they can be a valuable asset by providing essential feedback since they have an established relationship with the new hire. Have clear growth plans as an organization, and clear plans that demonstrate your investment in your employees.
