How Does a Manager Motivate and Inspire the Team?
Understand Your Team
A good leader recognizes what intrinsically motivates employees and pushes those buttons. No two people are the same, and leaders who take the time to learn what matters to their different employees can inevitably provide better results by utilizing that insight.
An effective manager ensures that they have the right people on the team and gives them the tools, support and autonomy to succeed. A good manager supports the team to know they will do what is right, and if they don’t are open to being “course corrected.” Everyone has lives outside of work, and if the team is working hard and producing and someone needs personal time off, a supportive manager will accommodate their needs.
Be Present and Engaged
A good manager should care about staff satisfaction which then leads to patient safety and satisfaction. A good manager gets to know how you think and how you make decisions. Leading by example is a great way to keep the team on track. A great leader will be there to motivate you on good days and bad days.
They need to listen to the team to identify what is holding them back, then remove those obstacles. A supported team that sees the engagement of leadership in following through will motivate and inspire them.
Be Part of the Team
One thing leaders can do to be effective at motivating is to be part of the team. The manager needs to understand and know what you are going through. Sometimes they may be like a “cheerleader” – cheering you on to the next level. Or you may need more tangible help – maybe you need some additional training or need to have short meetings to keep you motivated.
Each person is different, and a manager needs to find out what works for each. It’s important to be there for your team and they need to know that you have their back.
